Beppe Tenti, the expedition’s organizer and chief, explained that this year’s rally included four driverless robotic vehicles powered by solar panels.
“We decided to include electric cars in our expedition to draw more interest to it,” Tenti said.

The Overland World Truck rallies, which venture to the world’s most distant places, have been held since 1996. Participants in the rallies record their adventures on camera and the footage is later broadcast on the Italian state television channel RaiUno. This year, the Overland World Truck Expedition is holding its 13th rally on the route from Milan to Shanghai. Italian car enthusiasts will drive across Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Hungary, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan and China.
