NEW YORK, September 29 (RIA Novosti) - Independent inspections should be carried out at a number of hydroelectric power plants in connection with the recent deadly accident at a Siberian hydroelectric station last month, Uzbekistan's foreign minister said.
Water surged into the Sayano-Shushenskaya plant on Siberia's Yenisei River on August 17 destroying a turbine hall and killing 75 people, presumably as a result of "technical and administrative faults."
Speaking at the 64th session of the UN General Assembly, Vladimir Norov said inspections with the participation of UN specialists should be carried out at two large hydroelectric power plants currently under construction in neighboring countries - the Rogun Dam on the Vakhsh River in Tajikistan and two Kambarata power stations on the Syr Darya River in Kyrgyzstan.
He also said there was "urgent necessity" to assess technical condition of other Soviet-era hydraulic structures built on the two major Central Asian rivers of Amu Darya and Syr Darya.
