Danish police prevented youth environmental organization activists from forming a live chain around the Bella Center in Copenhagen where the UN climate conference is underway, organizers said Friday.
Delegations from 193 countries have been negotiating at the UN Climate Change Conference since December 7, but observers say the countries have made little progress in reaching any meaningful deal to curb greenhouse gas emissions. The conference ends today.
The activists, who said the protest was sanctioned by police, planned to prevent global leaders from leaving the building until they adopt an agreement to counter global warming.
"I've got bad news. The attempt to surround the Bella Center has been stopped. Though police said they sanctioned it, later we found out police had no intentions of letting us gather other than at a small site near the subway station," a protest organizer said in an email.
He said police blocked those who came later to support the protestors. "After long arguments, we decided to stop the action," the email said.
