An Amur tigress captured after attacking dogs in Russia's Far East is to be transferred to a local private wildlife sanctuary.

Animal inspectors caught the young tigress - called Roskosh - on June 5 after she had attacked several dogs in villages in the Khabarovsk Territory. She was taken to an animal shelter.

"We originally planned to re-release Roskosh into the wild," Eduard Kruglov, head of the center, said.

"Roskosh is a large and healthy tigress," Kruglov added. "Environmentalists hope this will help preserve the population of this rare type of animal."

The Amur tiger is an endangered species. In 2010, only 450 Amur tigers were left in the Primorye and Kharabovsk territories in Russia's Far East.
