A 5.6 magnitude earthquake was registered off the coast of Taiwan on Wednesday, Xinhua news agency reported.

The earthquake struck at 9:08 a.m. local time (1:08 GMT) to the southeast of Taiwan with the epicenter at 20 km (12.4 miles) depth. No casualties were reported and no tsunami warning was issued.

Taiwan is regularly hit by the quakes as it lies in a seismically dangerous area, near the junction of the Eurasian tectonic plate and the Philippine Sea plate.

In 1999 Taiwan was hit by a series of 7.6 magnitude earthquakes, which killed a total of over 2,600 people.
