© RIA Novosti. Georgy KurolesinSome 600,000 people have registered online to visit the Turin Cathedral and see the Holy Shroud, due to be exhibited there from April 10 to May 23, Vatican radio reported Friday.
Registration started December 1 at http://www.sindone.org. Turin authorities expect some 2.5 million Christian believers to arrive in Turin to see the shroud, with Pope Benedict XVI planning to visit the Italian city on May 2 to hold a mass and bless those who have gathered.
The shroud is a linen cloth bearing the facial image of a man thought to have died after torture that included crucifixion. Christians believe the body of Jesus Christ was wrapped up in the Shroud, after which his image remained on it.
A total of 48,000 people will be able to visit the shroud daily.
