MOSCOW, April 23 (RIA Novosti) - British rhythm and blues singer Joe Cocker gave an interview to RIA Novosti ahead of his trip to Moscow, where he will play at the Kremlin Palace on May 17.

Could you tell us about the program for your upcoming Moscow concert? Will you be focusing on tracks from your new album, or will you play the old hits, and if so, which?

We look forward to performing a few songs off the new CD such as Hymn 4 my Soul, Pass It On, and As Long As I Can See the Light. And we'll always do the hits - Leave Your Hat On, Unchain My Heart, Summer In The City, Up Where We Belong You Are So Beautiful, and many more.

What's the main idea behind your new album?

The idea for this album was to make a record the same way we did in the 70's.

We recorded analog on two-inch tape with no pro tools we tried to make a record where all the songs connected into one piece. All the musicians recorded live on the floor including myself with not many overdubs.

Does it include cover versions?

Every song on this album is a cover version. We went for songs by Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Steve Wonder and the title song by Andy Fairweather Low.

How long did it take to make the album?

It took about four months to prepare and record the CD. We recorded at Sunset Sound in L.A., where I recorded in 1970 with Ethan Johns father Glenn Johns.

You often cover obscure songs and turn them into hits. How do you choose them?

In my spare time I love to listen to all kinds of songs and when I hear something I like I put it aside until we start in the studio and then pull it out to see if we can make something of it.

Which performers will appear at the Moscow concert with you?

I will have my touring band with me - Mike Finnigan who also played on the record, and Jack Bruno on drums, Oneida James on bass, Gene Black on guitar and our two girls Nikki Tillman and Vivian Sessoms.

What about high-tech equipment and props?

This time around it will be all music with no tricks, no props. Just get ready to rock!

This isn't your first time performing at the Kremlin Palace. How did you feel last time?

It's always a great privilege to perform at the Kremlin - there is so much history, you can't help but feel inspired.

What do you think of Russian audiences?

We have always loved the Russian audiences. Very passionate and great listeners - but sometimes a little quiet.

When will the next Joe Cocker album come out?

We will record again in late 2009 for a 2010 world tour release but at this time we haven't even thought of material or a concept.

What goals do you still aim for in your music?

At this time I try to stay focused while on tour and try for the best shows possible. In my spare time I like to be in the green house tending to my tomatos. And in the morning I love taking the dog for long walks.

We are looking forward to seeing all our Russian fans in May.....
