President Dmitry Medvedev on Monday called for a higher priority to be given to ethnic Russian culture and said a viable national culture policy was needed.
"Special attention should be given to ethnic Russian culture. This is a key to the development of our entire national culture," he said.
He noted that Russians are the largest ethnic group in the country and that Russian is the state language.
"The Russian Orthodox Church is the largest confession in our country," Medvedev said.
It is also necessary to promote modern Russian folklore, music and literature, he added.
