The Bolshoi Theater in Moscow is attempting to tackle the problem of scalpers reselling tickets at skyrocketing prices by printing passport numbers on performance tickets.

There has been a surge in ticket sales since the theater reopened two weeks ago after a six-year renovation.

Previously theater-goers were only allowed to buy two tickets each for performances, but this did little to combat scalpers, Bolshoi spokeswoman Yekaterina Novikova told RIA Novosti.

Although this month’s tickets are sold out at the ticket counters, it is always possible to get one from scalpers for up to 40,000 rubles ($1,300), though the actual price is around 3,000 rubles ($100) at the box office.

But now the theater will try a different approach by printing the passport number of the individual attending the performance. Tickets and passports will then be compared at the entrance.

You will now have to show a passport upon purchase, Novikova said, adding that “the decision was made because of public complaints.”
