Russia's energy giant overhauls its management system
The revision is designed to prevent a repetition of accidents like the blackout in Moscow on May 25, when southern Moscow's supplies of electricity, water, and communications were cut off. On that day, power cuts disabled elevators, telephones, cash machines, the subway, traffic lights, trains, and stock exchanges. The blackout also paralyzed the southern part of the Moscow region and several neighboring areas.
"To prevent such situations in the future, the strategic and tactical management of the company are being overhauled, and, above all, safety and reliability requirements will be toughened," Voloshin said.
He added that the holding's business strategy was being corrected, and priority would be assigned to modernization and technological re-equipment.
Moreover, Voloshin said some elements of the strategy and the pace of the restructuring would also be adjusted, with the network and the distributing components to be consolidated at a faster pace.
He also said the prime cause of the accident was extremely worn out equipment, "which reflects serious problems facing RAO UES and Russia's energy sector as a whole."
