The press service of the regional energy company, Kamchatskenergo, said that replacement of the Pauzhetskaya station's turbine-generators, and a geothermal modernization project would increase the station's capacity from 8.5 to 14 megawatts. The work is to be completed by this October.
The station cannot use its full power due to geothermal shortages. New geothermal wells are needed. A specialized firm, Burgeoterm, is conducting fundamental repair work on the equipment to make it possible to use the existing power units to the full.
The Pauzhetskaya station was Russia's first geothermal station and was built in 1966.
Geothermal stations transform the internal warmth of the Earth (the energy of hot steam water sources) into electric power. Such stations can also be found in the United States, New Zealand, Italy, Iceland, and Japan.
