Russian banks aggregate profits of $3.5bln in 1Q06 - figures

MOSCOW, May 24 (RIA Novosti) - A total of 1,186 out of 1,238 credit institutions operating in Russia posted an aggregate profit of 96.85 billion rubles ($3.58 bln) in the first quarter, the Central Bank said Wednesday.

According to the Central Bank's report published on its Web site, 52 credit institutions made losses in the first quarter of 2006.

Banks made an aggregate profit of 95.99 billion rubles (about $3.55 bln). Profitable credit institutions turned in a profit of 96.85 billion rubles (about $3.58 bln), whereas loss-operating banks posted a loss of 861.9 million rubles (about $31.9 mln), the Central Bank said.

The total assets of credit institutions rose to 10,421 billion rubles (about $385 bln) as of April 1, 2006 from 9,750 billion (about $361 bln) as of January 1, 2006.
