Future of gas supplies to Ukraine uncertain - Gazprom CEO

MOSCOW, June 30 (RIA Novosti) - No agreement has yet been reached on supplies of Russian natural gas to Ukraine in 4Q06, Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller said Friday.

"Yesterday we had to interrupt talks with Turkmenistan, which raises a question: how and under what conditions supplies of gas to Ukraine will be conducted in the fourth quarter [of 2006], and at what price," Miller told a news conference.

Turkmenistan said Thursday it would cut off supplies of natural gas to Russia if a new gas deal with a new price of $100 per 1,000 cubic meters was not signed by September.

"The current contract for the delivery of 30 bln cu m of Turkmen gas will be fulfilled before early September. Then gas supplies to Russia will be cut off, since no contract has been signed for the second half of this year or for 2007," Turkmenistan's state news service said.

Naftogaz Ukrainy signed a contract to buy Turkmen gas in 2006. Under tripartite agreements reached in December 2005, Turkmenistan undertook to supply natural gas to Ukraine at $50 for 1,000 cu m in the first half of 2006, and at $60 per 1,000 cu m in the second half.

But Turkmenistan has not shipped any gas to Ukraine since the start of this year.
