NEW DELHI, January 25 (RIA Novosti) - India's National Thermal Power Corporation and a Russian-Indian consortium signed Thursday an agreement on the technical and commercial terms of a contract to build hydropower facilities in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

The consortium, comprising Russia's Zarubezhvodstroi and Indian industrial group SSJV, won an international tender to implement the $250 mln Tapovan hydropower project within 44 months.

A protocol on assigning the Tapovan project to the tender winner is expected to be signed January 25.

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in India earlier in the day on a visit aimed at boosting trade ties and securing military and energy deals. Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov is also in the country, and has signed several arms deals, including an agreement on the licensed production of Russian RD-33 jet engines and the joint development of a military transport plane.

During his two-day visit, the Russian president is expected to sign agreements on the construction of additional reactors for the Kudankulam NPP and of new nuclear plants in India under Russian designs, as well as setting up a Russian-Indian joint venture for the production of titanium dioxide and other titanium products.
