Kaliningrad plant to more than triple amber output

KALININGRAD, February 7 (RIA Novosti) - The Kaliningrad amber plant in Russia's Baltic exclave said Wednesday it intends to more than triple amber production, to reach 450 metric tons a year.

"We plan to increase the production of amber to 250 metric tons a year and then achieve the designed capacity of 450 metric tons a year. For this purpose, work launched last year to ensure the enterprise's entry into the market of jewelry made from amber must be concluded," the company said in a news release.

The Kaliningrad amber plant was established in 1947 at the Palmniken seaside amber deposit, one of the world's largest. Since its establishment, the factory has been Russia's sole amber producer.

Last year, the plant produced 131.7 metric tons of amber.
