ROME, May 25 (RIA Novosti) - G8 energy ministers meeting in Rome have taken an interest in an energy proposal made by President Dmitry Medvedev, Russian Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko said on Monday.

G8 energy leaders began their meeting on Sunday to agree an oil price that could boost investment in the oil sphere without hampering economic recovery around the globe.

"This important issue was discussed at bilateral meetings. I can say clearly that most forum participants took an interest in our position," Shmatko said.

Medvedev earlier proposed the signing of a comprehensive energy pact that could boost energy development in Europe. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said the document could establish a base for developing energy relations.

Shmatko said most participants at the Rome meeting agreed it would be necessary to discuss Russia's position.

"We have agreed to hold additional events to discuss the initiative, including within under the auspices of the European Commission," he said.

Shmatko said Russia could "come out with a proposal to hold a broad international forum on the issue."

The OPEC group will meet in Vienna on Thursday to adjust crude demand and supply after oil prices reached $62.26 on May 20.
