Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said on Monday that road construction, ship-building and engineering were priority areas for cooperation between Croatia and Russia.

The Croatian president is on a working visit to Moscow, the last before his term expires in early 2010.

"Russia's potential is huge while Croatia's potential is small. However, great potential can be found in the human factor and certain branches of industry. Croatia has completed the construction of roads and I believe we hold a leading place in Europe in the development of a highway network. This factor facilitates cooperation between Croatian and Russian businesses," Mesic said.

He said Croatia had accumulated large potential in housing construction and would like to cooperate in this sphere not only with Moscow but also with some Russian regions.

Mesic said the countries could also cooperate in ship-building.

"Croatia has a highly developed ship-building industry, which is currently in a rather grave condition. However, cooperation with Russia would help build new modern vessels," he said.

Mesic said that Russia and Croatia could cooperate more closely in machine-building.

"Russia has corresponding requirements in this sphere and we must help establish contacts between business partners from both countries. This is precisely the aim of my visit," he said.
