Germany's leading gas buyer E.ON Ruhrgas is trying to formulate new pricing mechanisms with suppliers, but wants to maintain stable long-term relations with its partners, Reiner Hartmann, head of E.ON Ruhrgas Russia, said on Friday.

Hartmann said the situation with gas supplies on the European market had recently become complicated.

"That is why we are currently negotiating not only with Russia, but with other gas-producing partners. They are Norway and the Netherlands," Hartmann said. "We want to design a new mechanism, but keep long-term agreements with our partners. Ruhrgas is seeking slightly modified agreements."

Ruhrgas has requested Russia's gas giant Gazprom cut prices or change other supply terms as demand for gas was falling on the back of the global financial crisis and growing supply.

Ruhrgas has also pointed to the difference in prices between long-term contracts used by Gazprom and prices on the spot market.

Gazprom conceded and added clauses to the contract that make Russian gas more competitive.
