Sakhalin Energy, the project operator of Russia's Sakhalin-2 oil and gas development, exported 7.38 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the first nine months of 2010, a more than two-fold increase year-on-year, a regional government official said on Monday.

Sakhalin Energy, the project operator of Russia's Sakhalin-2 oil and gas development, exported 7.38 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the first nine months of 2010, a more than two-fold increase year-on-year, a regional government official said on Monday.

"(The company) exported 7.377 million tons of LNG in January-September under the Sakhalin-2 project compared with 3.66 million tons in the same period of 2009," the environmental management department official at the Ministry for Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Sakhalin region said.

Russia's first LNG plant was opened in Sakhalin in February 2009. The plant reprocesses gas, produced by the Sakhalin-2 project and transported by a gas pipeline to a plant in Prigorodnoye village in the Amur region in Russia`s Far East.

The LNG plant's capacity amounts to 9.6 million tons of LNG per year. The companies from Japan, the United States and South Korea have already contracted the bulk of gas for next 25 years.

The core shareholder of Sakhalin Energy is Russian gas giant Gazprom, with a 50 percent plus one share. The other shareholders of the company include Royal Dutch/Shell with 27.5 percent, Japan's Mitsui and Mitsubishi with 12.5 percent and 10 percent respectively.

The total value of the Sakhalin-2 project amounts to $20 billion. As part of the project, the Piltun-Astokhskoe and Lunskoe deposits with overall reserves of 150 million tons of oil and 500 billion cubic meters of gas are being developed in the region.
