The price of Russia's natural gas supplies to Ukraine should reflect "changed realities", Ukraine's Prime Minister Mykola Azarov told RIA Novosti on Monday.

"You know that gas pricing formula realities have changed considerably this year," Azarov said.

The Ukrainian premier earlier spoke of the need to change the gas agreement signed with Russia by former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and later expressed the hope that the parties would reach a compromise on this issue.

"Such a rigid formula and such a rigid agreement cannot correspond to the realities of today. That is why, we naturally need to discuss these aspects and agree on developing a mutually advantageous approach," he said.

Russian Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko has previously said Russia was considering Ukraine's proposal that the gas pricing formula should be changed.

Ukraine receives a 20 percent discount on Russian gas deliveries compared to European supply prices in exchange for permission for the Russian Black Sea fleet to berth in bases in the Crimea for 25 years after 2017, when the previous base agreement expires.
