The gas deals signed with Russia by the previous Ukrainian government are not compliant with the country's current legislation, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said on Wednesday.

The gas deals signed with Russia by the previous Ukrainian government are not compliant with the country's current legislation, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said on Wednesday.

Azarov explained that Ukraine had joined the European Energy Charter and adopted a new law on the gas market.

"Correspondingly, the international legal and internal legislative base, which was taken into account during the signing and fulfilment of agreements on gas supplies and transit, has changed. The agreement signed by the previous government, does not comply with the current legislation," Azarov told a Ukrainian Cabinet meeting.

He reiterated that Ukraine considered the gas supplies agreement with Russia unfair and unsatisfactory.

"Market realities have changed, that is why, the basic parameters and the pricing formula need to be revised," Azarov added.
