U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will remain in his position through the presidential campaign in 2012, the Politico newspaper reported on Sunday.

Presidential candidate Michelle Bachmann, Senator Jim DeMint and House Speaker John Boehner called for President Barack Obama to demand Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner's resignation after the Ratings agency Standard & Poor's downgraded the United States' top-notch AAA credit score by one notch to AA-plus on Friday.

"Secretary Geithner has let the President know that he plans to stay on in his position at Treasury," Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Jenni LeCompte said in a statement. "He looks forward to the important work ahead on the challenges facing our great country."

John Chambers, the chairman of Standard & Poor's sovereign debt ratings, estimated that it could take between nine and 18 years for the nation to regain its AAA credit rating.

The United States presidential election to be held on November 6, 2012.
