Joint projects that may be approved at a meeting of the Russian-Nicaraguan intergovernmental commission are worth $600 million, La Prensa publication reported citing the Central American country’s development, industry and commerce minister, Orlando Solorzano.

Solorzano leads a Nicaraguan delegation heading to Moscow on Monday to attend the commission’s meeting.

He said three intergovernmental agreements, including on space cooperation, are expected to be signed, adding that joint projects that will be implemented within the next two years focus on agriculture, culture, education and tourism.

Bilateral ties have become stronger since Daniel Ortega returned to the post of Nicaragua’s president after the 2006 election.

Russia supplies wheat, buses and cars to the country.

In September 2008, Nicaragua followed Russia’s suit in recognizing the independence of two former Georgian republics - South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
