Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said on Wednesday he is considering the construction of plants to produce microchips in country's Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad.

Rogozin told reporters that various enterprises should be established in Russia to supply the country's space agency Roscosmos and state atomic energy corporation Rosatom with all necessary products to remove their dependence on imports.

"A board with the EU is a great advantage for the [Kaliningrad] region [to set up such enterprises there]. The enterprises should make products which will be in demand not only by the Russian defense industry but also by the European Union," he said.

Rogozin believes the Russian electronics industry is seriously lagging behind the European manufacturers so the Russian government plans to set up microchips production plants in the exclave similar to the one that has been recently launched outside Moscow in Zelenograd which is one of President Dmitry Medvedev's project called Skolkovo.
