SAMARA, February 19 (RIA Novosti) – Russia's Aviakor aircraft factory in Samara will deliver the final Tupolev Tu-154 airliner to the Defense Ministry on Tuesday, concluding the longest serial production run for a Soviet-era passenger jet, an Aviakor spokeswoman said.
“Serial production is coming to an end. Repairs on airliners that are still operational will carry on for several years from now. The last serial airliner will be transferred to the customer, the Defense Ministry of Russia,” the spokeswoman said.
The official handover ceremony will be attended by representatives of the Defense Ministry, the Tupolev aircraft design bureau and the Aviakor aviation plant, she said.
The Tu-154, a medium-haul trijet airliner (NATO reporting name Careless) was designed in the mid-1960's and entered service in 1970. Around 1,000 were built over four decades.
The design has been the workhorse of Soviet and Russian airlines, carrying around half of Aeroflot's passengers during the Soviet era.
The aircraft was sold to and operated by about 17 non-Russian airlines.
With a cruising speed of 975 km/h (620 mph), the Tu-154 was one of the fastest civilian aircraft in operation and had a range of 5,280 km (3,340 miles).
With a service life of 45,000 hours, but capable of 80,000 with upgrades, the aircraft was expected to last until 2016, although noise restrictions have seen services to Western Europe and other areas banned in recent years for all but modified variants on certain routes.

- tec123 Mr. Putin please checkout Aeroflot in your corruption drive you may yet find yet another sheep with wolf clothing.20:44, 22/02/2013I strongly believe that Russian some of them are 100% behind a fall or the non existence of Russian made aircraft Aeroflot is the chief instigator of this.
Why because of corruption the kicks backs to middle men is huge so why buy Russian when one can made huge money at the side?
If a Russian plane crash the Russia news media some of them at least is quick to drive a nail in the coffin of the airline, many plane crashes around the world, have emergency landings but you will never here a Western media crying down its planes never,
But Russian my god some are only too happy to see the aircraft industries go to waste.
Recently the super jet 100 had some problems well I don’t have to say what the Russians had to say about their own airline, yesterday a Western plane own by a middle East country made an emergency landing not a single bad reporting was done to bad mouth the plane by Western press but if it was a Russian plane my God Russians.
Russia has very good airlines I have travel in many of them before and see nothing wrong with Russia built airplanes which brings to mind before not too long ago we all flew in planes where smoking, no TV, with analogue instruments and all was well the same Russian planes flew thousand time over and whiles there were crashes most were human error not the plane.
The moral of it all Russians are sometimes their own worst enemy a total lack of patriotism.
This is why the West will always made use of Russian lack of patriotism of Russians.- arsanlupinArrant nonsense!05:46, 23/02/2013This post is arrant nonsense – every time an airliner crashes anywhere the media makes a big deal out of it for weeks or months. The current frenzy over the Boeing 787 Dreamliner is an excellent example – and that plane never crashed or injured a single person.
However it is a documented fact that many airlines of the former Soviet Union have been very poor in maintaining their fleets – no matter who build the planes. One example: NordAvia is having persistent problems with their fleet of Boeing 737-500’s – because they refuse to follow manufacturer’s guidelines for maintenance. I was stuck on the tarmac in Arkhangelsk because of their incompetence, and missed my connection.
I also rode on an Air Moldova Airbus A320 whose interior was falling apart.
The best-built planes in the world aren’t worth anything at all if you don’t maintain them properly!
