Dressed in police attire, macaques have become full-fledged police officers at the Thai roadblocks since 2004. The monkeys serve on the highways and create an atmosphere of relaxation while people stand at the checkpoint. They “endow the roadblocks with more of a human face and relieve stress while passing through the checkpoint.” The monkeys are “recruited” by local police authorities. The long-tailed “guards” became internationally celebrated after the Thai police started to register them in reports at the public relations department.
