Despite all predictions that the first black pope would be elected, Argentina’s Jorge Mario Bergoglio became the new pope on March 13. He was not among the favorites in the "next pope" race, unlike Cardinals Peter Turkson of Ghana, Angelo Scola of Italy and Odilo Scherer from Brazil.
