Moscow golden youth bombers were 'fed up with everything'

MOSCOW, November 7 (RIA Novosti) - Two young Muscovites from well-off families who detonated a small explosive device in a cafe in the Russian capital in late October have told investigators they were "fed up with everything."

The detained, identified as 19-year-old Dmitry and 21-year-old Olga, were responsible for a blast in a Shokoladnitsa chain cafe in Moscow's Victory Square. No one was injured in the incident and no major damage was caused.

Both the suspects are student drop-outs and have been identified by media outlets as members of Russia's Golden Youth, privileged children of the country's tiny business and social elite.

"They said they were fed up with everything and just wanted to see people shaken up a bit," law enforcement official Alexei Bakromeyev told the gzt.ru news website. "At first they tested out explosive materials in deserted areas. Then they wanted to see some panic."

The explosive device had the equivalent of 15-20 grams of TNT and was made up of pyrotechnic material wrapped tightly in polythene.

"The explosive materials used were dangerous enough," Bakromeyev commented. "They could have gone off while being transported."

The two suspects are believed to live in neighboring buildings in the Russian capital and to have met in an Internet chat room. Media reports say former trainee hairdresser Dmitry had been obsessed with explosives since he was 12, and introduced Olga to his hobby.
