A police officer in southeast Russia shot dead a man who attacked him with an ax, a spokeswoman for the regional police department said on Wednesday.

Svetlana Pavina said the assailant, Kholmumin Diyerov, axed to death his 52-year-old friend in the Siberian republic of Khakassia late on Monday and later attacked the woman he lived with and a 4-year-old girl.

When the police officer arrived at the scene, Diyerov came at him with the ax. The officer fired two warning shots in the air before shooting at the man.

A criminal investigation has been started.
