The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has condemned the apparent human rights violations against juveniles in Georgia's prison system, the Georgian media reported.

The fund’s concerns come as a wider scandal broke earlier this week around Georgia’s prison system, with videos portraying prison guards torturing inmates shown on two Georgian television networks.

UNICEF expressed concern particularly over the alleged maltreatment of juveniles in the Avchala correctional facility. The fund has called on the Georgian government to thoroughly investigate the situation and to ensure the security of those detained as well as those who witnessed the violence.

The Georgian Interior Ministry reported on Tuesday the abuse of prisoners, in which a group of guards tortured inmates while filming the acts on video, in Tbilisi’s Gldani No. 8 prison. The ministry released parts of the video, but two TV channels – Maestro and Channel 9 – aired the full version of the shocking video, sparking public anger and protests.

The Prosecutor’s Office announced the arrest of ten employees, while the Georgian Minister of Corrections, Probation and Legal Assistance, Khatuna Kalmakhelidze, resigned on Wednesday over the scandal.

The video sparked two days of protests in Tbilisi and other Georgian cities just two weeks before the country’s October 1 parliamentary elections.
