Investigators in the Sverdlovsk Region accused two police officers on Wednesday of beating and inappropriately using a stun gun on a detainee, according to the local branch of the Investigative Committee.
Investigators allege the two policemen, identified only as Mikhail Zh., 43, and Dmitry M., 39, beat and tasered a detainee at the Krasnoturinsk precinct station in October 2011.
“They are accused of committing a crime under the article ‘Abuse of power through the use of violence,’” said the investigators’ press release.
The criminal investigation is nearly complete, after which the case will be sent for approval of the charges and, ultimately, to trial. The men face up to 10 years in prison.
Police abuse in Russia has recently been cast under the spotlight again, after the high-profile rape, torture and killing in Kazan last year of a 52-year-old resident by local police.
