MOSCOW, October 16 (RIA Novosti)
The Russian government fired a senior police general on Tuesday for beating up two of his subordinates while drunk, the Kremlin website said.
Russian investigators launched criminal proceedings against Major General Alexander Ivanin in connection with the incident in April this year, in which he beat up two regional commanders following a drinking bout at a Sverdlovsk Region leisure resort.
Ivanin formerly headed up the Interior Ministry's aviation and rapid reaction divisions.
The department includes the Interior Ministry's elite Zubr (Bison) and Rys (Lynx) special forces units and the Yastreb (Hawk) special purpose aviation unit. Ivanin was appointed the unit's head in June 2011.

News that Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin would resign in order to run for the mayoral election in September came as quite a shock. Sobyanin’s political potential is fairly dubious, not to mention his approval ratings. He has not finished many of the projects he initiated and the electoral effect from these projects is expected to come a bit later than September 2013. Sobyanin’s opponents were not entirely unprepared for this blitzkrieg.
