Russian counter-narcotics police will soon receive the first batch of reconnaissance unmanned air vehicles (UAV) to track drug-trafficking in remote and hard-to-access areas, Russia’s anti-drug chief Viktor Ivanov said Thursday.

“The first batch is ready and undergoing testing to ensure its smooth integration in the operational work of the Federal Drug Control Service,” Ivanov said.

Ivanov did not specify the make or the origin of the UAVs, but said they had been acquired as part of state defense procurement system.

The official also said counter-narcotics police would be equipped with advanced video surveillance equipment, new firearms and GLONASS satellite navigation and positioning systems.

Russia remains a major conduit of drugs originating in Afghanistan.

According to UN data, there are 2.5 million drug addicts and over 5.1 million drug users in the country. Over 90 percent of Russian drug addicts use heroin.
