MAKHACHKALA, May 22 (RIA Novosti) - A policeman was killed and a soldier wounded after unknown assailants opened fire on them in Buinaksk, a city in Russia’s North Caucasus Republic of Dagestan, a spokesman for the republic’s Interior Ministry said.

According to the spokesman, the policemen and soldier were hospitalized with gun wounds in a hospital in Buinaksk after unidentified suspects opened fire on their car on Tuesday night.

“The policeman died of sustained gun wounds and the soldier is in critical condition and cannot be questioned at the moment,” the spokesman said.

The Islamist insurgency, once confined largely to the republic of Chechnya, has spread across the North Caucasus in recent years. Attacks on security forces, police and civilians are reported regularly in the neighboring republics of Dagestan, Ingushetia and Kabardino-Balkaria.
