NALCHIK, October 2 (RIA Novosti) – Law enforcement officers have killed an unknown assailant in the Russian North Caucasus republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, the Interior Ministry's regional department reported Wednesday.

When policemen from the department’s anti-extremism center tried to check the ID of the driver of a VAZ-2108 car without a license plate parked near a stadium in the northern town of Baksan at about 02:20 Moscow Time Wednesday, the driver opened fire on them and was killed by return fire, the department said.

No other people were reported injured. An investigation is under way.

Attacks on security forces, police and civilians occur regularly in the North Caucasus, generated by ethnic, religious and political rivalries, as well as poverty and corruption. The violence is also fed by an Islamist insurgency, which has been especially resilient in Dagestan and fueled a series of bloody post-Soviet separatist wars in the neighboring republic of Chechnya.
