BUENOS AIRES, May 3 (RIA Novosti, Yuri Nikolayev) - A retrospective of Russian films about the Second World War has opened in Uruguay in the week leading up to the 60th V-E anniversary.

According to Russian Embassy officials, Elem Klimov's 1985 feature "Come and See" was the first to check out. Other pictures to be screened as part of the retrospective include Mikhail Kalatozov's "The Cranes Are Flying" (1957), Andrei Tarkovsky's "Ivan's Childhood" (1962), Larissa Shepitko's "The Ascent" (1976), and Mikhail Romm's "Ordinary Fascism" (1965).

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Russian Ambassador to Uruguay, Jan Burlyai, remarked that the Uruguayan public do appreciate the Russian nation's crucial contribution to the overthrow of Nazism.

Manuel Martinez, Director of the Uruguayan Cinematheque, where the Russian film retrospective is taking place, highlighted the fine artistic quality of the pictures on show, describing them as classics of the Russian cinema.
