UNESCO HELPS CHECHEN MUSEUMS

MOSCOW, May 16 (RIA Novosti) - UNESCO has allocated $25,000 to the Russian committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) on the solution of information problems of Chechen museums, ICOM-Russia President and director of the Leo Tolstoi State Museum Vitaly Remizov said at a press conference on Monday.

In his words, computers, phones, faxes, video, photo and audio equipment will be handed to the National Museum of the Chechen Republic, the Arbi Mamakayev Museum and the Museum of Starogladkovskaya settlement. The rest of the allocated sum will be spent on the software of the National Museum's web site which will be opened at Grozny University.

According to Remizov, only 10% of 230,000 showpieces remained at the National Museum which had been a major museum center in the Caucasus.

ICOM-Russia members recently visited Chechnya, Remizov said.

"We covered some 400 kilometers, saw this destruction and problems the local museums are facing and met with museum workers and students," he said.

ICOM-Russia is to pay special attention to the training of museum workers. According to Remizov, he talked to directors of many Russian museums and all of them agreed to train Chechen specialists at their own expense.

ICOM-Russia was set up in 1957. Today it comprises 300 collective and individual members, museums and museum workers. ICOM-Russia is a member of the UNESCO non-governmental International Council of Museums as a national association promoting the development of international museum links and museum cooperation.
