Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, 10, and Rubina Ali, 9, who both live in Garib Nagar slum in Bandra East, Mumbai, played in the early scenes of the film, which took eight Oscars, including Best Picture, at the Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday.
The children's parents said they received $2,465 and $725 respectively for a year's work, The Daily Telegraph reported. The paper said this figure was disputed by the studio behind the film.
"For 30 days work, the children were paid three times the average local annual adult salary," a Fox Searchlight spokesman was quoted as saying by the paper.
Local authorities announced on Tuesday that both would be given a flat each from the chief minister's discretionary quota. The idea was voiced by the local branch of India's ruling Congress party. Party leader Sonia Gandhi on Monday congratulated the Slumdog Millionaire team on their Oscars success.
The British film, which was shot in India, tells the story of a young man from the Mumbai slums who takes part in the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? and wins 20 million rupees.
The film's hero, Jamal Malik, an 18 year-old orphan, is later arrested under suspicion of cheating and explains that he knew the answers because of things that happened to him in his life.
