Christie's Russian art auction nets $6.6 mln

LONDON, June 10 (RIA Novosti) - Russian artworks fetched over $6.6 million, well above the lowest estimate of $5.4 million, at an auction at Christie's in London, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported on Wednesday.

With just 70% of all lots being sold, the auction house failed to clear the maximum estimate of $8 million.

The auction's top lot was A Finnish village. Roofs by Vasilii Shukhaev, which went for about $1.1 million, more than twice its pre-sale estimate.

Two works by Russia's most famous marine artist Ivan Aivazovsky, The survivor and Ukrainian harvest also made it into the top three, selling for $667,000 and $534,000, respectively.

Christie's also auctioned works by Faberge, jewelry and coins.

Christie's main rival, Sotheby's, sold 17 works of Russian art for $12.5 million during the first day of its annual Russian art days on Tuesday.
