Al sur de la frontera (South of the Border) focuses on the opposition Chavez faced at home and abroad, especially from the Bush administration.
"I watched the film, it is good. The effort Oliver [Stone] made is grand," the Venezuelan president said.
The American producer has regularly visited Venezuela since Chavez was elected in 1998, and met the president personally for the first time in 2007.
Stone has also made films about Fidel Castro, Richard Nixon and John F Kennedy.
His film about George Bush, entitled W, opened the Dubai film festival last year. The Bush administration never made any official comment on the film.
The Chavez movie will be screened for the first time on September 7 at the Venice International Film Festival in Italy.
