Moldova's early parliamentary election planned for July - source

11:27 15/06/2009

CHISINAU, June 15 (RIA Novosti) - Early parliamentary elections in Moldova could take place in late July, a member of the ex-Soviet republic's legislature said on Monday.

"President Vladimir Voronin could announce a date for the early parliamentary polls at a parliamentary session today. The polls could be held in late July," the lawmaker told RIA Novosti.

Moldova's new parliament faces dissolution and a new general election after failing to elect a president twice.

The ruling Communist Party was unable to persuade the opposition to support the country's former premier Zinaida Greceanii as the new leader. She fell one vote short of the required 61 as the opposition boycotted to ballots.

The parliamentary polls in April sparked protests in the capital, Chisinau, that were originally led by the opposition but spiraled out of control when some 10,000 rioters broke into the presidential residence and parliament. Several hundred protesters and police were injured in the violence.
