TBILISI, July 9 (RIA Novosti) - Georgia's opposition has announced plans to extend protests against President Mikheil Saakashvili across the South Caucasus state, an opposition leader said on Thursday.
Fourteen leading non-parliamentary opposition parties and political organizations have been protesting in Georgia since April 9 to demand that President Mikheil Saakashvili resign over his failure to carry out democratic reforms and last August's disastrous war with Russia.
"We had a choice - either relentless struggle or revolution. We chose the relentless struggle and now we need more resources, a new strategy, a broader political spectrum and civil actions," said Eka Beselia, the leader of the Movement for a United Georgia.
Beselia said the opposition planned to start to extend its protests in July and August. "We will start from Zugdidi [western Georgia] and continue across the whole of Georgia," she said, adding that the protests would see a peak in August-September.
The opposition leader said the main outcome of the ongoing protests was that "the authorities have become weaker" and "victory is getting closer."
Over 110 opposition activists have so far been detained, Beselia said. She also urged international human rights organizations and the Council of Europe to assess the actions of the Georgian authorities.
