TBILISI, July 22 (RIA Novosti) - The U.S. should appoint a representative to oversee democratic reforms in Georgia, the opposition alliance in the former Soviet republic said in a statement ahead of the U.S. vice president's visit.

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden will arrive in the ex-Soviet state later on Wednesday.

The Alliance for Georgia, led by former Georgian UN envoy Irakli Alasania, said Washington should appoint "a person with international experience and authority to oversee developments and become a political guarantor of agreements reached between the [country's] leadership and the opposition."

The Georgian opposition movement also reiterated that early elections were necessary to carry out democratic reforms.

"We are convinced that early elections will enable the people to express their attitude towards political events and political forces," the Alliance for Georgia said.

The alliance praised Biden's visit as "a very important event for Georgia," which demonstrated "U.S. support for Georgia."

"This is an evident demonstration that the U.S. will never allow new aggression from Russia towards Georgia and will never recognize the new reality that Russia is trying to establish in the region," the opposition alliance said.
