Karzai extends lead in Afghan election
18:33 02/09/2009

KABUL, September 2 (RIA Novosti) - Afghanistan's incumbent leader Hamid Karzai has strengthened his lead in the ongoing vote count following the August 20 presidential election, the country's electoral authorities said on Wednesday.

With 60.4% of ballots counted, Karzai has 47.27% of votes, short of the 50% needed to preclude an election run-off.

Daud Najafi, chief electoral officer, said the incumbent's nearest rival, former foreign minster Abdullah Abdullah, has 32.57%.

Election day was plagued by militant attacks, with some 400 registered across the country.
