CHISINAU, September 17 (RIA Novosti) - Acting Moldovan President Mihai Ghimpu on Thursday nominated the leader of the country's Liberal Democratic Party for the post of prime minister.
"The Alliance for European Integration is nominating Vlad Filat for the post of prime minister," Ghimpu said at a news conference.
Parliamentary speaker Ghimpu became acting president on September 11 when Vladimir Voronin stepped down after serving two consecutive four-year presidential terms.
Voronin, Europe's first democratically elected Communist leader after the fall of the Soviet Union, was barred by the Constitution from seeking a third term.
Moldova's Constitutional court confirmed earlier on Thursday the legitimacy of Ghimpu's position as acting president, which gave him the right to nominate a prime minister.
Meanwhile, MPs, led by a pro-Western coalition, will have to try to elect a president in the next two months. Presidential polls can be held either before or after the government is formed, but within two months after the presidential post is declared vacant.
Ghimpu, who leads the Liberal Party, has openly supported unification with Romania, and also on Thursday issued an order to annul a visa regime with Romania introduced after post-election riots in the capital Chisinau in April.
"The decree on the visa regime with Romania approved by the previous parliament on the initiative of the country's president is out of line with an earlier ruling by Moldova's legislative body, according to which all EU citizens are guaranteed free entry to Moldova," he said.
