TBILISI, November 4 (RIA Novosti) - Georgian Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze said on Wednesday he had decided to renounce his Russian citizenship.
A lawmaker for the Kremlin-backed A Just Russia party, Semyon Bagdasarov, had earlier proposed to strip the Georgian diplomat of his Russian citizenship. The move was rejected by the Russian Foreign Ministry on the grounds that it contradicts Russian laws.
"I have already sent a letter saying that I renounce Russian citizenship and my Russian passport to the Russian president," Vashadze said.
The minister has been repeatedly criticized by the opposition for his dual Russian-Georgian citizenship.
