Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has suspended his membership in his Party of Regions and gave his powers to his party colleague Nikolai Azarov, a party member said Wednesday.
Ukrainian laws ban the president from heading a political party. Former president Viktor Yushchenko did not observe this norm. He was and remains the leader of the Our Ukraine party.
"As Viktor Fyodorovich [Yanukovych] became president, he in line with the law charged Nikolai Azarov with leading the party," Mikhail Chechetov said.
Chechetov said the new leader's candidacies will be discussed at the next party congress.
Earlier Azarov became acting leader of the Party of Regions' faction in parliament.
Yanukovych earlier said Azarov could become premier after parliament voted Wednesday for the dismissal of Yulia Tymoshenko's government.
