Kyrgyzstan will seek the extradition of deposed president Kurmanbek Bakiyev from Belarus through international courts, the deputy head of the interim government said on Tuesday.

"We will insist through international courts on Kurmanbek Bakiyev's extradition to Kyrgyzstan" Azimbek Beknazarov said.

He made his statement after the Belarusian Prosecutor General's Office rejected Kyrgyzstan's extradition request earlier on Tuesday.

Beknazarov said Minsk's decision was predictable.

"They say it is a political case. However, we are not condemning Kurmanbek Bakiyev himself, we only want to bring him to justice for the deaths of 90 young people," Beknazarov added, according to the Kyrgyz 24.kg news agency.

The Belarusian Prosecutor General's Office received the extradition request, along with an 18-page attachment, on May 21, a month after Bakiyev took refuge in Belarus.

The interim government, who took power amid violent unrest in early April, accuses the ousted president of ordering police to open fire at civilians during riots in the Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek.

It has stripped Bakiyev of his presidential immunity and launched criminal proceedings against him.
