A monument to Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev will be opened in the Turkish capital of Ankara on Thursday, a spokesman for the lower house of the Kazakh parliament has said.

An official delegation from Kazakhstan led by the chairman of the majilis, Ural Mukhamedzhanov, is due to participate in the opening ceremony together with Turkish Parliament Speaker Mehmet Ali Sahin.

Turkish President Abdullah Gul during his official visit to Kazakhstan in May announced the decision to open the monument to Nazarbayev for everything he "does for Turkic peace."

Nazarbayev, 69, has ruled the Central Asian state for almost 21 years, as first secretary of the Kazakh Communist Party from 1989, and since the breakup of the Soviet Union as president of Kazakhstan.

Earlier this month, he was granted the title of "Leader of the Nation" by his country's lawmakers. The title gives him a wide range of privileges after the expiration of his presidential term.
