The Estonian government has approved the transfer of 2.09 million kroons ($190,000) to repay a loan received from Latvia in 1989.

Estonia on Thursday approved the transfer of 2.09 million kroons ($190,000) to repay a loan received from Latvia in 1989, the government press service announced.

Twenty years ago, the Consulate General of Estonia in New York, which represented Estonia in the United States after the republic became part of the Soviet Union in 1940, borrowed $185,000 from the Latvian Embassy in Washington, Estonian media reported.

Linguist and author Aarand Roos, who was the Estonian consul in New York in 1982-1995, said that funds the occupied Estonian Republic had deposited in foreign banks had run out by 1990 and it had been impossible to draft budgets for the following year, Delfi.ee reported.

Diplomat Ernst Jaakson described in his memoirs how he was forced to turn for help to his Latvian colleague, Dr. Anatol Dinbergs. The Baltic Course website reports that according to Jaakson, Dinbergs promised that the $185,000 loan would be interest-free.

Estonia is expected to transfer the money in time for Latvia's Independence Day, which is celebrated on November 18.
